The advice these homeowners get is always the same: "Just topdress with compost." While well-intentioned, that's like telling someone with a fever to "just take medicine." Which medicine? The secret isn't just adding compost; it's adding the right amount to achieve a specific, measurable change in your soil. I'm going to show you exactly how we calculate the correct compost application rate on our jobs to turn depleted dirt into a thriving lawn foundation.

Why "Just Add Compost" is Bad Advice

    • Your lawn is 4,000 sq. ft. (or 4 units of 1,000 sq. ft.).
    • Total Compost Needed: 4 * 2.0 yd³ = 8.0 cubic yards.

This is a major renovation. For a single application, this is too much (it equates to a 1/2-inch layer). We would likely split this into two 1/4-inch applications, one in the fall and one the following spring, to avoid smothering the turf.

Compost Application Depth vs. Expected SOM Increase
