The formula

cu yd = (L × W × depth/12) ÷ 27. Tons = cu yd × 1.4 (typical gravel).

Worked example

30 × 10 ft × 4" = 3.7 cu yd ≈ 5.2 tons.

Most landscape gravel is 1.3–1.5 tons/yd³; we use 1.4 as a safe average.
