  • Sheltered Locations: If a house, a thick line of mature trees, or a large hill completely blocks the prevailing wind, you might get away with 8-foot spacing on a taller privacy fence.
  • Calm Climates: In regions without frequent severe weather, thunderstorms, or high seasonal winds, the risk is lower. However, weather is becoming less predictable everywhere.

The Non-Negotiables: When You MUST Use 6-Foot Spacing

On our crew, we have a simple rule: if a client's project meets any of these criteria, we quote it with 6-foot spacing and explain why. It's our way of ensuring a job we can stand behind.

  1. Tall Privacy Fences: Any solid (non-permeable) wood or vinyl fence that is 6 feet tall or higher.
